Yes, with the right setup. Aluminium MIG welding requires 100% Argon shielding gas, a spool gun or push-pull gun to prevent wire feed problems, and an aluminium-specific liner in the MIG gun. What is the difference between MIG and flux-core welding?

MIG welding uses a solid wire electrode with external shielding gas. Flux-core welding uses a hollow wire with flux inside — either with external gas (dual-shield) or self-shielded (no gas required). Self-shielded flux-core works outdoors in windy conditions where gas coverage would be disrupted. Dual-shield flux-core provides higher deposition rates for production welding on thick steel.

OSHA 1910.252 requires adequate ventilation and fume control for all welding operations. MIG welding with carbon steel wire produces manganese and iron oxide fumes. How to Choose a MIG Welder

Match amperage to material thickness

A general rule: 1 amp per 0.001 inch of material thickness. 1/8" steel requires 125A minimum. 1/4" steel requires 250A. Most shop fabrication falls in the 150-300A range. Production welding on structural steel requires 300A+.

Input voltage: 120V vs 240V

120V welders (Miller Millermatic 141, Lincoln Power MIG 140) suit light fabrication and home shops where 240V is not available. 240V welders provide higher duty cycle and are required for professional production environments.

Duty cycle matters for production work

Duty cycle is the percentage of a 10-minute period the welder can run at full output. 20% duty cycle at 250A = 2 minutes on, 8 minutes off. For production welding, specify 60% duty cycle or higher at your target amperage.

Wire feed speed and wire diameter

.023" wire suits thin sheet metal (18-24 gauge). .030" is the most versatile for 16ga-3/16". .035" handles 3/16" to 1/2". .045" suits production welding on 1/4"+ steel.

Shielding gas

75/25 Argon/CO2 (C25) is the standard for carbon steel MIG. 100% Argon for aluminium. 90/10 Argon/CO2 for short-arc on thin steel. Pure CO2 for flux-core welding.
